Captain Bell’s medal

This medal is the Companion of the Order of the Bath (Military division). It was awarded to FS Bell, Captain of HMS Exeter during the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. This was the first major naval battle in the Second World War, during which HMS Exeter was severely damaged but continued in battle. Captain Bell and his surviving crew were given the Freedom of the City of Exeter on 29 February 1940.
