Model of the Saxon pottery kiln

Model of the Saxon pottery kiln

During excavations in 1935 just within the city wall on the site of the then Bedford Garage (now the top of Princesshay), an abandoned kiln was found. It was re-excavated by Lady Aileen Fox in 1955, but it was only during the 1970s that it was realised that the kiln and its pottery waste were late Saxon in date.

The model seen here model is a reconstruction of the kiln. It consisted of a circular chamber cut into the natural clay, with two opposing stoking flues. The pottery was fired when stacked on a raised floor built above the kiln base.
