Reconstruction of the Roman town wall at Paul Street

Excavation prior to the construction of the Habitat building in Paul Street in the early 1980s revealed the former existence of a square tower on the inside face of the wall - no doubt one of a series. The drawing shows the appearance of the defences in the third and fourth centuries: the shallow ditch in front, the wall standing about 6m high, with an earth rampart behind.
