Sherd with a Christian monogram

Back to Time Period
Sherd with a Christian monogram

The sherd constitutes the only evidence for Christianity in Roman Devon. Found during excavations by Lady Aileen Fox in South Street in 1946-7, the sherd is from a Black-Burnished ware jar made around Poole Harbour in Dorset.

Scratched into the surface is the ‘Chi-Rho’ monogram - the symbol combining the first two letters of the name of Christ in Greek.
