Early Roman timber buildings

Early Roman timber buildings

The image shows the complex archaeology typical of Exeter’s city centre, shown here at Goldsmith Street. Cutting through the Roman deposits are many medieval pits and other disturbances.

At the centre of the image is the solid floor of opus signinum (a mortar aggregate) laid on a bed of pitched stones. The edges of the room are marked by quarter-round mouldings. The room formed part of a timber-built house or shop.
