Ceramique a l’eponge

Back to Time Period
Ceramique a l’eponge

An unusual aspect of the finds of late Roman Exeter is the recovery of these sherds of red-slipped tableware from the region of Aquitaine in south-west France. The most common form among them is the small flanged bowl. Some sherds are decorated, and this is thought to have been applied by a sponge - hence the name céramique à l’éponge.
