Model of a barrack block within the Exeter fortress c AD 55–75

The 80 men of each Exeter century, commanded by a centurion, were housed in a long narrow barrack block. Each block had two elements: a series of small square rooms fronted by a verandah for the legionary soldiers, attached to a wider house at one end for the centurion. The standard length of an Exeter barrack was about 61m (about 200 Roman feet). They were so long that no single barrack has been excavated completely in the city, but their full layout can be determined by putting together evidence from several sites.
