A carrot amphora

A carrot amphora

Carrot amphorae were so named from their bizarre shape. It is believed that they were made somewhere in the east Mediterranean, perhaps Turkey, but the kiln sites have not yet been found. They are presumed to have held some special food - perhaps dates or prunes.

This almost intact specimen was found in the excavation which preceded the construction of the slip road between Holloway Street and Western Way in 1974.
