The overmantel from 190 High Street

This accomplished woodcarving, which would have been displayed above a fireplace, was carved in the Low Countries in the late 16th century and imported into Exeter at that time. The scene depicted is the Judgement of Paris. Paris, seated left, judges the beauty of Athena (right, with helmet), Juno (centre, with peacock) and Aphrodite (left, with child). He chooses Aphrodite.
