A doorway from Larkbeare House

A doorway from Larkbeare House

Larkbeare was a substantial house built in the mid 16th century at the foot of Holloway Street. One wing still stands; the rest of the house was demolished in the late 19th century. The doorway is late gothic in style, with foliage ornament in the traditional manner of pre-Reformation days, swallowed at the foot of the doorway by a grotesque head. The museum also holds the fragmentary carved lintel of a fireplace from the house.
