Mould fragments from cauldron casting

Mould fragments from cauldron casting

Cauldrons were cast between clay moulds, which were broken open and discarded after casting. The clay used to make the moulds for the Birdall foundry was dug from pits at the back of the foundry, and tens of thousands of fragments of such moulds were recovered from the back-filled pits. The examples shown here were used in casting cauldron feet.
