Fortress wares

The legion must have brought with it many skilled craftsmen who could supply its needs. Among them were evidently potters who made wheel-thrown pottery fired in kilns in the Roman tradition. Their output included flagons (jugs), mortaria (mixing bowls) and many other forms unfamiliar to native potters. Although no kiln has yet been found, the major production centre of these wares must have been just outside the fortress, perhaps in the area of modern Princesshay.
