A plate made in Delft in 1698

The factories of Delft were famous for their production of fine tin-glazed pottery - hence the name delftware. This plate, dated 1698 and attributable by its painting style to Delft, bears the coat of arms of John Burrell, an Exeter grocer who was mayor of the city in 1697.

It is of considerable interest in showing that individual pieces of delftware were occasionally commissioned by Devon clients.
