The Custom House at Topsham

Back to Time Period
The Custom House at Topsham

The quayside at Topsham had long been the most important place at which large foreign ships unloaded their cargoes. The building now known as the Lighter Inn was built here as the official building for the control of custom duty. It was surveyed in 1995-7 by Exeter Archaeology; a reconstruction of its appearance when newly built is shown at the foot of the drawing.
