The city centre at the beginning of the century

The image reproduces the central part of the Ordnance Survey map of Exeter of 1905. The walled area remains crowded with houses, packed into the long narrow tenement strips of medieval origin. Crowding was especially acute in the West Quarter (St John's Ward).
