Iron Age pottery undergoing reconstruction at Exeter City Museums

The pottery sherds recovered at Southernhay form one of the best assemblages of Iron Age pottery in Devon. Hand-made jars in a variety of local fabrics are present. Most distinctive are the vessels with bands of incised decoration - so-called ‘South-Western Decorated’ wares. Pottery decorated in this manner was found at the contemporary sites of Glastonbury and Meare in Somerset, and is sometimes called ‘Glastonbury ware’, although the Exeter finds were made locally.

In this illustration one of the museum's conservators completes the conservation of one vessel.
