A coin of Nero (obverse)

A coin of Nero (obverse)

This coin of Nero was found in the garden of No. 99 Beacon Lane in 1984. The obverse side is seen heere. It is a silver tetradrachm of Nero struck in the year AD 64-5, when the Second Augustan legion was at Exeter. It is, however, a puzzle because such coins did not routinely circulate in Britain but in the east Mediterranean. It is uncertain whether the coin is a collector’s loss of the recent past.
