Location plan of the Exeter fortress and annexes, and Valiant Soldier cemetery site

The plan shows the position of the legionary fortress, the grey-toned rectangle at the centre of the city, in relation to the later Roman city wall which surrounds it and some of the main streets of the modern city. Outside the legionary fortress were at least one annexe (a protected enclosure attached to the fortress) and one or two military compounds.

The position of the cemetery beside the Roman road to Topsham is marked by the site name ‘Valiant Soldier’ (bottom right), named after the pub which stood on the site before 1973.
