Bronze Age axe from the Exeter area

Bronze Age axe from the Exeter area

The cast bronze palstave (axe), dating to c. 1350-1050 BC, has high flanges and a cross ridge which provided the seating for the spilt end of a wooden shaft. A binding was wrapped around the shaft and axe, then tied to the loop on its side.

Oxidisation during burial has changed the original shiny brassgold surface colour to a mottled green patina.
