The Baths, Southernhay, Exeter

The Baths, Southernhay, Exeter

In the early 19th century Southernhay, which lay just outside the city walls, became the most fashionable part of Exeter. It offered spaciousness which could not be found within the old city walls. Among its new amenities were these grand baths built in 1821 in Neo-Classical style. They provided a range of facilities including cold, hot, plunge, shower and medicated baths.

The print is taken from a steel engraving by JF Lambert after WH Bartlett, published by Fisher and Son, London, in 1830.
