View of Exeter from St Leonard’s churchyard

This anonymous painting formed part of the Fisher Bequest to the museum in 1891 and was formerly in the collection of Thomas Shapter, the distinguished early 19th century medical doctor.

The view looks from St Leonard’s churchyard, with its Georgian monuments, in the foreground, across the Shutebrook valley towards the walled city. The view is now obscured by housing and changes to the churchyard.
