Sword

A range of weapons were used during the Civil War with different types of soldier provided with different weapons.

The sword was just one weapon carried by musketeers and cavalrymen. Whilst muskets (an early form of gun) were also carried by both, these were slow to reload and therefore probably only used once during each battle. Swords were most useful in close-quarter combat.

The image shows a sword dating to the Civil War period which is held in the Museum's collections.
