Sword (gladius)

Back to Time Period
Sword (gladius)

The sword (gladius) was one of the main weapons used by the Roman army and was usually carried on the right hand side of the body so it was easliy accessible and did not interfere with the shield which was held in the left hand. This replica shows its suspension by a strap worn over the shoulder.

Archaeological evidence suggests that soldiers sometimes decorated their own scabbards.
