Belt (cingulum) and dagger (pugio)

Belt (cingulum) and dagger (pugio)

The belt was used both for display and as a functional item. The replica here shows its use for suspending the dagger.

The dagger was carried on the left side of the body. It had a wide iron blade with a handle of iron or brass. Archaeological evidence has shown that the scabbard was often highly decorated, perhaps undertaken by the individual soldier.
