Spear (pilum)

The spear (pilum) was one of the main weapons used by the legionary army. It consisted of a wooden shaft with an iron blade which was designed to bend on imapct. This meant it could not be thrown back by the enemy.
The image shows a replica similar to those used by the soldiers in Exeter.
