Exeter from Exwick

Francis Towne's fine oil painting shows how compact the city still was in late Georgian times. The view looks from the fields above the River Exe, with the city in the middle distance, its skyline still dominated by the medieval cathedral and parish churches, and its medieval walls still apparent. In the distance is the Exe Estuary. The painting was first exhibited in 1773.
