Donn’s map of Exeter

Donn’s map of Exeter

Benjamin Donn, a native of Bideford, published his map of Devon in 1765. It was much esteemed and was awarded the first premium given by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Inset into one sheet was his map of Exeter, shown here.

By this time the suburbs had spread as far as Old Tiverton Road, the foot of Paris Street and Holloway Street, but there were still fields butting up to most stretches of the city walls.
