The Exeter Atheneum medal (reverse)

The Atheneum was a gentlemen's literary and scientific club which met in Bedford Circus. Medals such as this were issued to its first members in 1835. They show Sir Isaac Newton, then regarded as the greatest English scientist on the obverse. This particular medal belonged to Richard Ford of Heavitree, a writer well known in the 19th century for his Traveller's Guide to Spain. The reverse, shown here, has his name incribed.
