The memorial to Matthew Godwin

Matthew Godwin, 'a pious, gentle and clever youth, most skilful master-musician', died tragically early at the age of seventeen in 1586. Alone among the youths of the medieval and early modern city he was commemorated with his own monument; it will be found on the north wall of the cathedral nave. It shows Matthew kneeling before an organ, with musical instruments behind him and angels above.
