The destruction of the suburbs

The destruction of the suburbs

A remarkable discovery of recent years has been the realisation by Dr Mark Stoyle that large areas of suburbs were simply demolished for the city's defence at the start of the Civil War. The areas cleared are indicated here in red: St Sidwell's, the suburbs outside South Gate, St Thomas and St David's.

Acknowledgments: M. Stoyle, Exeter City Council
