Plans showing defences outside South Gate

The upper plan shows the simple form of Roman and medieval defences: fairly narrow ditches parallel to the wall. In the Civil War the much broader inner ditch and the construction of an outer angle bastion of earth reflect adaptation to warfare with cannon and hand-guns.
