The new Exe Bridge

The new Exe Bridge

The bridge, shown here in Reuben Southey's painting, was opened in 1778. With it was built New Bridge Street, a great ramp lined with houses, joining the bridge to the foot of Fore Street. The whole exercise was a major engineering project, designed to replace the narrow and awkward medieval bridge.
