A wood carving from Harry Hems’ studio

As Hems' firm carried out repairs of medieval churches, he accumulated a collection of medieval wood carvings, used in his workshop in training his carvers to work in the medieval manner. This example is a boss from a church roof. His collection of more than 300 hundred such carvings was bought by our museum in 1938 and remains one of the finest museum collections of English late medieval woodwork.
