South Somerset ware cup

Back to Time Period
South Somerset ware cup

This complete cup of red earthenware was found unstratified at Lower Coombe Street, Exeter. It was made in South Somerset, and very probably at the kilns in the village of Donyatt near Ilminster. The use of a coating of white slip and a glaze flecked with copper green are characteristic features. This type of vessel is common at Exeter in the period c. 1720-1820.
