A Ligurian maiolica fragment from 38 North Street

The fragment of the base of a dish or saucer-dish shows a prancing stag among foliage. It illustrates the high standard of maiolica made in Liguria, in the centres of Genoa, Albisola and Savona.

Ligurian maiolica is far from common in Britain; only three examples have been recognised at Exeter. This example was discarded c . 1680-90.
