Model of Wonford Hospital

Model of Wonford Hospital

By the early 1960s it was realised that the old site at Southernhay was too restricted for a major regional hospital, and expansion would require a completely new hospital further from the city centre. This was eventually begun at Wonford in 1968 and opened in 1971.

By the mid 1980s the principal building of the Wonford hospital, a multi-storey concrete block, had developed serious structural problems. The model of 1986 shows the architect's proposals for the new building: a series of low ranges on three floors only, interlocking to form small courtyards, the walls faced with brick. This new building was opened in March 1994.
