The finds come from the waterlogged bottoms of pits in the yards behind houses in the city centre. All are of tanned cattle hide. The fragments of leather belt are from an 11th-century pit, the big near-complete shoes (equivalent to modern shoe size 8 or 9), is of the late Norman period; fragments of lace and cobbler
