Tudor and Stuart houses around Westgate

The painting by K. Fischer shows the group of early houses around the Westgate and St Mary Steps church as they appeared around 1900. The houses belonged mainly to the 16th and 17th centuries and were generally more modest than those in the main streets; some were only one room deep, lacking courtyard or kitchen ranges.
