Remains of a bell–casting

This photograph illustrates the unusually informative evidence for the processes of casting revealed by excavation of the Pennington foundry. The circle of bricks, coated with baked clay, is the truncated stub of the core on which the bell was cast Reconstruction of Thomas Pennington's foundry. The hole of the strickle is evident at the centre of the image; charcoal from the baking of moulds is visible in section. An earlier bell-mould is beginning to show below the one undergoing excavation.
