John Hooker

Shown here towards the end of his life, John Hooker wears the black tunic and starched white lace cuffs and ruff popular in late Elizabethan England. Hooker was the city's Chamberlain. Enormously proud of his native city, he studied and ordered its ancient documents. He was the first and perhaps greatest of the city's distinguished contributors to historical studies.
