A South Somerset plate from Goldsmith Street

A South Somerset plate from Goldsmith Street

Much of the pottery used in Exeter at this time was made by potters in south Somerset, such as those at Donyatt, Wrangway and Nether Stowey. They used red clays, often coated with white slip, through which decoration was scratched in sgraffito techniques. This example dates to c.1670-1710.
