One of the Custom House ceilings

In 1680-1 the north Devon master of the plaster's craft, John Abbott, was commissioned by the city to provide the ceilings for the new Custom House on Exeter Quay. Using motifs of garlands and sprays of plants, this ceiling in the Surveyor's Room illustrates the delicate and refined style of work achieved by Abbott in his later life.
