Check for Thomas Carnall's Coffee House (obverse)

The Coffee House was opened at the top of Fore Street in 1879. According to its advert 'Visitors to Exeter should go to Carnall's Coffee Tavern, Fore Street, where they will find every accommodation on the most reasonable terms, the largest and most complete coffee tavern in the city.' By 1897 its name had changed to the 'Assembly Room and Devon and Exeter Hotel'. The check belongs to the 1880s or 90s.
