Exeter from Haven Banks

The pencil sketch by William Spreat shows the canal in the middle of Victoria's reign. The major building works of 1829-30 and the opening of the Basin had created a canal capable of taking sea-going ships, but sadly the opening of the railways in the 1840s soon removed much of the trade - hence the peaceful scene.
