Plan of the military compound at Holloway Street
Back to Time Period![Plan of the military compound at Holloway Street](/includes/thumb/phpThumb.php?src=/images/objects/Plan_of_the_military_compound_at_Holloway_Street_dug_by_the_Roman_army.jpg&w=500)
The plan shows the foundation trenches excavated in 1974 on the site of the Valiant Soldier public house in Holloway Street; the site now underlies the roundabout outside the South Gate. The trenches were dug by the Roman army to hold the wall timbers of their buildings; the remains of at least three rectangular buildings were arranged around a narrow gravelled courtyard and a fourth building stood further to the north-west. Pits which probably held posts for verandahs and other structures were also scattered across the site.
