A Byzantine coin from Pinhoe Road (obverse)

This copper alloy follis of the Byzantine ruler Romanus I of Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) was issued in the years AD 920-44. The obverse here shows a rather charming royal portrait, with Romanus holding his orb and sceptre.

Sadly, this is not likely to be evidence of contact with the east Mediterranean in the 10th century AD. Coins like this were brought in great numbers into Britain in the last two centuries. They were not especially valuable, and many were discarded, to be re-excavated later as apparent archaeological finds.
