Nicholas Hilliard

Back to Time Period
Nicholas Hilliard

Nicholas Hilliard, the distinguished miniaturist painter at the court of Elizabeth I and James I, was the son of a distinguished Exeter citizen. His father was Richard Hilliard, High Sheriff of the city and county in 1560. In his youth Nicholas had served him as an apprentice goldsmith.

Although dated 1577 this engraving was prepared at a much later date, perhaps from one of Hilliard’s own miniatures.
