An Iron Age round house, Guildhall Shopping Centre

The circular trench at the centre of the image, found below Roman deposits, is typical evidence of an Iron Age round house. The upright timbers of the walls of the house would have risen from the trench, touching the conical roof, which would have been thatched or covered with turf. Impressive reconstructions can be seen at the Butser 'Iron Age Farm', Hampshire and Castel Henllys, Pembrokeshire.
