Shield (scutum)
Back to Time Period![Shield (scutum)](/includes/thumb/phpThumb.php?src=/images/objects/Replica_Sheild_(scutum).jpg&w=500)
The image shows a replica shield (scutum). This was an important part of Roman military equipment providing protection for the soldier's legs and body. It was constructed from layers of wood, to provide a curved board, and covered in leather. The designs on the front of the shield were important for identifying the different units within a battle and also for intimidating the enemy.
